Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
